Protect Your Online World from Scammers

Cybersecurity experts frequently warn us that online accounts are vulnerable to hackers. While this is true, the online world isn’t going away. Here are tips to help you secure your online accounts and protect yourself from scammers who may try to invade your privacy and finances.

Create Strong Passwords

According to  , simple passwords can be cracked in minutes. Following the tips below can create a significant barrier to scammers trying to access your accounts.

  • Create long, complex passwords that use a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid easy-to-guess words or phrases such as your address or the names of family members.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication and/or use an authenticator app for your logins.

Be Security Conscious

  • Secure your home Wi-Fi network to prevent unauthorized access to your personal computers and information. This includes changing your router’s default password.
  • Avoid using public, unsecured Wi-Fi, as this can allow criminals to steal your usernames and passwords, allowing them access to your personal and financial information.

Beware of Email and Text Links

Email and text message links can be traps designed to mimic legitimate companies. These fraudulent links trick victims into sharing personal and financial information, often locking them out of their accounts while scammers drain funds and run up charges.

  • Never click unexpected links. Hover over the link, and ask yourself, “Does the URL make sense?” When in doubt, don’t click it!
  • Use previously saved bookmarks or conduct a fresh online search for the company to verify any offers or inquiries.
  • When in doubt, contact the company directly to verify the communication is legitimate.
